DYSAUTONOMIA
WOMEN'S HEALTH
Transitioning through perimenopause and menopause is a natural part of life, yet many women feel unprepared for the changes in their bodies. Hormonal shifts can affect everything from your sleep and mood to your bone density and heart health.
At Curated Medicine, we believe you should never have to navigate these changes alone or wonder whether your symptoms are simply in your head. As a family physician, my goal is to provide compassionate, personalized care that helps you feel like yourself again.
(If you are curious about how our practice works before diving in, you can always explore our Membership Options to learn more about our personalized approach to patient care.)
Here is what every woman should know about the transition into menopause, how to recognize key signs, and the modern treatments available today.
While people often use these terms interchangeably, they refer to distinct phases in your reproductive health.
Perimenopause is the transition period leading up to menopause. Estrogen and progesterone levels begin to fluctuate unpredictably. This phase often starts in a woman’s 40s, though it can begin in the late 30s, and typically lasts anywhere from four to eight years. You still have periods during perimenopause, but they may become irregular.
Menopause is technically a single point in time. It is officially diagnosed after you have gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. The average age of menopause in the United States is 51.
Postmenopause refers to all the years after menopause has occurred. While some symptoms like hot flashes may subside over time, managing long term bone and heart health becomes a key priority.
| Feature | Perimenopause | Menopause & Postmenopause |
| Menstrual Cycle | Irregular, lighter, or heavier | Completely absent for 12+ months |
| Hormone Levels | Fluctuating wildly day to day | Consistently low estrogen levels |
| Pregnancy Risk | Still possible | No longer possible |
| Primary Focus | Managing symptoms & cycle changes | Maintaining bone, heart, and metabolic health |
Hormones act as chemical messengers across your entire body, which is why hormonal shifts cause such a wide range of physical and emotional changes.
A Quick Reminder: Every woman’s experience is unique. Some women notice mild changes, while others experience symptoms that disrupt daily life. Neither experience is wrong, but severe discomfort is never something you just have to endure.
Management is not one size fits all. At Curated Medicine, we tailor treatment strategies to your personal medical history, health goals, and risk factors. Treatment options include lifestyle and diet changes, prescription medications, and menopausal hormone therapy.
Targeted lifestyle adjustments support your body through this transition include:
Mindful stress reduction practices to support nervous system health and sleep quality.
Strength training to protect muscle mass and preserve bone density.
A heart healthy diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, and fiber.
If hormone therapy is not suitable for you due to personal preference or medical history, several effective non hormonal prescription options are available to help manage hot flashes and mood fluctuations.
Menopausal hormone therapy, often called MHT, remains the most effective treatment for hot flashes, night sweats, and prevention of bone loss. Medical consensus from major medical organizations confirms that for healthy women within ten years of menopause or under age 60, the benefits of HRT often far outweigh the risks.
